How to Find Your Voice by Copying What You Love

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received was;

“Start copying what you love. Copy copy copy copy copy, and at the end of the copy you will find yourself.”

What does this mean?

It means that if you want to learn a new skill, improve your craft, or find your voice, you should look for examples of people who have already done it and try to emulate them. Not to plagiarize them, of course, but to study their techniques, their choices, their styles, and their influences.

For example, when I wanted to become a better writer, I did the following:

  • I read a lot of books and articles by authors I admire, such as Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, Malcolm Gladwell, and Seth Godin.
  • I paid attention to how they structured their sentences, how they used metaphors, how they hooked the reader’s attention, and how they delivered their message.
  • I tried to write like them, using similar words, phrases, and formats. I experimented with different genres, tones, and perspectives.
  • I copied their voice until I found my own. I learned what worked for me and what didn’t. I developed my own style and voice.

It is not dishonest to copy. It’s a method of education. It’s a method of learning what functions well and poorly. It helps you expand both your repertoire and your confidence. It is a method of discovering who you are through other people’s work.

So don’t be afraid to copy what you love. Copy copy copy copy, and at the end of the copy, you will find yourself.
